Witch Hats

I’m just in the planning stages, but so far, I’ve gathered the block pattern, fabrics, and a vague idea of what I want the end product to be.

Details appear below each photo.

(2025 note: this quilt is stalled in the planning stages.)

The witch hat block from the Witch’s Night Out pattern book by It’s So Emma is the inspiration for this project.

I want my final quilt to contain five colors: black, white, green, orange, and purple. I’ve selected this green-on-white Swiss Dots fabric from Riley Blake Designs for the background.

Finding good white-on-black prints can be challenging most of the year, but it’s easy during the run up to Halloween!

I don’t want traditional Halloween imagery (cats, bats, ghosts, spiders) in this quilt, so I’m sticking with small florals, geometrics, and the like.

This collection, Urban Farmhouse Gatherings by Primitive Gatherings for Moda Fabrics, gives me many options in combinations of black, white, and gray.

My initial idea is to use white-on-black prints for the hats, one per block—although, if I’m being honest, it’s tempting to do some gray and some black. I’m going to think about it more, but these four prints (all from Urban Farmhouse Gatherings by Primitive Gatherings for Moda Fabrics) are excellent candidates.

I also came across this smaller collection, Dash of Pepper Essentials by Wilmington Prints. I’m considering using the two prints marked by the green lines for a couple of the hats.

I am planning to bring in orange and purple in the hats’ belts. To give the eye some relief from the cacophony of prints, I will be using orange and purple solids from this Halloween-inspired Crayola fabric collection from Riley Blake Designs.

Inside the Crayola box are these colors. The one marked with an X (black) is out of the running, but the others are under consideration.

I wanted something special and fun for the belt buckles, so I have selected this metallic gray-on-white stripe (Silver Sparkle Stripes by Riley Blake Designs). This is the only fabric besides the background dots that will appear in all the blocks.
